Question
Oyamo Pots
I am preparing to re-pot several of my carnivorous plants--drosera, butterworts, pitcher plants, & sundews. I am wondering if the Oyamo self-watering pots would be a good option as they provide a water reservoir that supposedly keeps the soil moist for up to 10 days.
AnswerHi Chad,
I haven't used those particular pots, so I can't comment directly about their effects with carnivorous plants. Based on my experiments with similar types of self watering pots, I can at least say that your butterworts will do fine.
Sundews like their soil to be very wet. They might do well if the pot can acheive this. Looking at the construction, it seems that a portion of the inner pot will constantly be in water. So it's possible sundews will grow well in it. Without having used the pot myself, you'll need to experiment with it and decide for yourself.
With your pitcher plants, it entirely depends on the type of pitcher plants you have. If you have Sarracenia, then you this pot will be appropriate. If you have Nepenthes, then avoid using this type of pot. The manner in which the pot keeps the soil moist will be too much moisture for Nepenthes. With this type of plant, you should top water them and let the water drain through.
Let us know how these pots work for you. We'd be interested in testing them out on our plants.
Good growing!
