Darlingtonia Californica/Nepenthes Alata

Question
I keep these plants at a steady temperature of 85 degrees.
After a week of the time I bought the plants, the nepenthes started to turn black starting from the growing points and the cobra lily started to shrivel. I give 12-16 hours of artificial light in the winter and indirect bright sun in the warmer seasons, the humidity is 65%. Sorry but i can't accept an e-mail, i got a new computer. I live in NYC, NY.

Answer
Hi Kevin,

Those plants are radically different in their care requirements.  Visit our caresheet pages at http://www.cobraplant.com/caresheets to get a general understanding of the care of these plants.  After reading the individual instructions, feel free to visit us back here at Allexperts if you need some clarification.

You didn't mention where you got the plants, but is sounds like you may have bought them at a big-box store, and they were being sold in those little cubes.  If that is the case, they have to go through a hardening off process.  That involves opening the cube a little bit, letting it be for a week, then open it more for a few more days, then finally taking the top off completely a couple of weeks later.  If you don't do this, the leaves are too weak from being in those containers to handle normal humidity changes.  This problem isn't because of the type of plants they are, it's because of the container.  I've seen cactus go through the same problem if they are put into enclosures.

Good Growing!
