QuestionI have an Asian Pitcher plant and im curious about how you split it? Because I would like more than 1 plant. Right now it has 2 branches and I see another branch starting to sprout from the base. The whole plant is about 7 inches tall and 10 inches wide. Thanks :)
AnswerHi Matt,
Nepenthes don't really develop independent crowns the way Sarracenia do. If you see multiple shoots, often they are attached under the soil, and don't have independent root systems. It's also possible that you may have a pot with more than one plant in it. The bottom line is that the plants need to have their own root system. If they do, you can separate. If they don't, you need to do a stem cuttting which involves rooting. That is a bit more involved than I can show you here at Allexperts. Several books on carnivorous plants show how to do Nepenthes stem cuttings. The Savage Garden has a good section, and our e-book, Secrets to Growing Beautiful Carnivorous Plants has a chapter on it also. It really helps to see diagrams and photos on how to do this.
Good Growing!
