Question
Butterwort (Pinguicula
Hi, my question has to do with the dormancy of mexican butterworts. I read that, in general, when these plants begin to grow a tight central rosette they should be taken out of the water tray to prevent rot and not put back in until the carnivorous leaves begin to grow again. I am confused with this because I am growing the plant in a greenhouse where temperatures vary from 50 to 80, and I am under the impression that the plant goes into its dry season form in cooler temperatures. I have attached a picture of the plant in question.
AnswerHi Jeremy,
Thanks for sending the picture. Overnight lows of 50 are pretty low, and can trigger dormancy. The short days of winter initiate it also. Many of ours in our greenhouse are doing the same thing right now. Just keep it drier for about a month, then begin watering normally again. As it gets warmer it will begin to re-emerge.
Good Growing!
