sarracenia purpurea burki

Question
I'm looking for a sarracenia purpurea s.venosa var.burki to purchase. From what I've been reading this may or may not be an actual plant. Though the in pictures I've seen they seem to have very short fat pitchers with large mouths and large ruffled lids.  On your web site under care sheets I see a Burke purple pitcher sarr. rosea. Is this available or do you know where I could find either of these plants for sale?   Thanks for every thing.    Jimmy

Answer
Hi Jimmy,

This is very real subspecies.  The confusion has come about because botanists have be wrangling over whether to call it a subspecies, Sarracenia purpurea venosa var. burkii, or a distinct species, Sarracenia rosea.  Currently I believe it is being called S. rosea, but the older terms are used interchangeably.  When you see the plant in person they do look different from their cousins.  They tend to be very fat, very hairy, and produce pink rather than red flowers.  They originate from the Florida panhandle.

We have this plant available periodically.  Just check back on our website from time to time.  Mid-spring is when you are most likely to see it offered.

Good Growing!
