Question
Hanging Nepenthes
I have a very healthy Nepenthes with leaves up to 8 inches long and growing by leaps and bounds (see attached picture). It is growing in a hanging basket outdoors in a soil mixture of peat moss, perlite with spaghnum moss coating the basket sides. Problem is...pitchers just don't develop! It used to have them but no more. Any suggestions for getting pitchers to develop?
Thanks
Mark
AnswerHi Mark,
Ahh yes. I used to have a couple ventrata's (Nepenthes deRoose's alata) in my previous house that looked just like this. They were both in a big north window that got good ambient light, but no direct sun. They never pitchered. When we moved and they started getting brighter light, wha-la! pitchers. Your plant needs more light. Now, since your plant is outside, you'll want to be judicious about this. Move it to a spot that gets direct morning sun, but is somewhat shaded from hot afternoon sun. You should see it start to make pitchers in about a month. If you've been fertilizing, cut back since this can inhibit pitcher production also.
Good Growing!
