Overwintering,

Question
Hello! I have a question for you guys. I currently have four sarracenia, one venus flytrap, and one hardy sundew, with live sphagnum moss growing in the pots as a dressing. They've had lots of rainwater and six hours of sun in the summer. I live in Staten Island, NY (part of NYC). I believe that is zone 6. Currently we experienced the first frost and I was wondering what to do with my plants now. Can I just put the pots in my unheated garage? Or should I just leave them outside? I really love these plants and I want to make sure they survive. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Pawel,

Depending on how cold it gets, the garage is a good option.  Be sure to clip off any dead leaves, and spray with a sulfur based fungicide.  Over the winter be sure to water them some.  They don't need to be as wet as during the growing season, but he soil should be moist.  If you have a spell of very cold weather, it might be good to throw an additional tarp over the plants if the garage temperaure gets down to single digits.

Good Growing!
