overwintering flytraps

Question
I have a bog garden which I have flytraps and pitcher plants. I live outside of Roanoke, VA up a mountain. While I have not had a frost at the house this year the area below me have. I don't cover the pitchers until I have had a few frost, but the fly traps I do after the first one. This year has been different, is there a certain temp to cover flytraps, or just wait until I get steady low temps? next week it is going down to 24 should I cover everything before that?

Thanks
Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

The rule of thumb we use is if the temperature is not going to rise above freezing during the day.  Then it's time to cover.  Here in Western Oregon we frequently get freezes in the mid-20's but don't start covering plants unless a spell of very cold weather is predicted.  If it's not going to rise above freezing during the day, or daytime temperatures are just barely above freezing we'll start covering with black plastic or protective fabric.

I looked at your forecast, and you should be just fine leaving them uncovered.  Our temperatures here at the nursery have been very similar.

Good Growing!
