QuestionQUESTION: I received a pot of fly traps from a lady my husband knows, He actually went to fix her air and heat and she gave them to him, with little instructions. The problem is that she had so many growing outside she just dug up some and put them in a small pot,( they sell them online, so I figured she knows what she is doing) but I want to put them in a bigger pot and spread them out some... I only have 2 that were open and I placed some flies in them,, I thought this was really neat, and my 10 yr old did also,, but I just wanted to know how to go about spreading them out. would it be like a normal flower where you just brush off the dirt and they come apart? please help with my new family interest.
ANSWER: Hi Sallyann,
You bring up several issues here, and I'm not sure if actually addressing them would be advantageous. You see, you mention that the person dug up the flytraps. I'm not sure if she dug them up from her own personal bog garden, or if she dug them up from the wild.
If she dug them up from the wild, then I'll need to hold off on providing any information. I strongly discourage growers from digging up flytraps from the wild since they are a protected species and it doesn't set a proper example for cultivated growing. In this case, it may be best to contact this person for more information.
If she dug them up from her own personal bog garden, then I'll need to know where you live since your climate will determine how to care for them in fall and winter.
I certainly invite you to submit a follow-up question with the relevant information. You may also review our flytrap care sheet on our main website:

QUESTION: she has her own garden,,she grows them and sells them, I would ask her any questions I need to ask but she has since gone out of town, and I don't want to mess up anything,, I live in Picayune, Mississippi, bout 30 min from the gulf coast. this pot she gave me is really tiny and there are about 8 of them in it. I just mainly wanted to some how grow them in a larger pot all together,, but I do not want to hurt them,,, I hope this information helps
AnswerThank you! This information is very useful. You can grow all flytraps in the same pot. However, since your plants are actively growing, you might see a slight set back from the recent repotting. Ideally the repotting should be done in early spring and not in fall. You're far enough south, however, that your growing season will offer some time for your plants to recover.
For now, keep your plants in the original pot. Avoid having to repot them yet again unless the original pot isn't appropriate for optimal growing or if the soil isn't the correct type.
Right now, you're starting from scratch and there are many new concepts you'll need to learn about growing flytraps, such as sunlight, water, soil and winter care. Much of the information will most likely go against some of the other information that you casually encountered. However, these concepts are too extensive to cover in this format.
