QuestionHello,
I live in Canada, and I have a Venus Flytrap. The weather here is becoming colder and colder, and the daylight hours is slowly decreasing. However, how can I know when my VF is going into dormacy? and it seems that it is growing continously, or it is just too early? What should I do when it is in dormacy? People told me to put it into the fridge, and it seems to be a very unnatural idea. Is there a easy way out? (like just put the pot somewhere cool for the rest of the winter e.g. next to my window, where the snow wont be able to kill it and it is not going to be too warm either." So do you have any suggestions?
AnswerHi Louis,
In this case I'll need to know where in Canada you live. You see the weather in Vancouver is much different than Toronto. This would depend heavily on the type of winter protection you'll need to provide.
For now, allow your plant to experience the cold temperatures. Even when it freezes overnight, continue to keep your flytrap outdoors. The frost will encourage your plant to go dormant. When the daytime temperature is consistently below 45癋 (7癈) or the nighttime temperature is consistently below 32癋 (0癈), then we can safely say that your plant is dormant.
Again, when this occurs and what you do next depends where you live in Canada. I invite you to write back as a follow-up with this information. Only until then can I provide specific recommendation that would be best suited for your location.
