QuestionHello,
I was recently considering purchasing a Sarracenia plant from you at Sarracenia NW, but I was wondering: would it be wise to get one at this time of year? I live in northern Michigan (not the Upper Peninsula), and Fall is rapidly approaching. In winter it is pretty much always below freezing, and it is not rare to experience sub-zero temperatures at night. Even with proper winterization, would it be wiser to simply wait until spring after their dormancy, or would it be fine to order now? The S. hybrid i had in mind was the Daina's Delight.
Thank you!
AnswerHi Jasen,
We grow our Sarracenia strictly outdoors, so they are already acclimated to outdoor growing, including freezing temperatures. It's usually a judgment call on the grower whether to purchase plants in fall or wait until spring. This usually depends on your horticultural experience. If you're new to carnivorous plants, you might find it easier to wait until spring. If you already have some carnivorous plants and are familiar with caring for container plants in winter, then you could order them now.
All the plants that we currently have available will be available in spring. Spring is also when we release some of our rare hybrids. For more information about growing Sarracenia and other carnivorous plants, visit the care sheet section online:
