QuestionI have a N. ampullaria that I want to put in a terrarium. I was wondering if there
are any other carnivorous plants that I can grow with the N. ampullaria. Thanks!
Luca
AnswerHi Luca,
Yes, there are many other types of carnivorous plants that will grow well alongside N. ampullaria. Other types of Nepenthes include N. bicalcarata, N. gracillis, N. distillatora, and N. mirabilis. These plants like warm, humid conditions like N. ampullaria does.
If your fluorescent lights are strong enough, you may also grow some of the woolly sundews, such as Drosera falconeri, D. kenneallyi, D. lanata, and D. paradoxa. These sundews are a bit finicky, however. So if you're new to growing carnivorous plants, you may want to hold off on them until you gain a bit more horticultural experience.
For easier sundews, D. adelae, D. prolifera and D. spatulata will also grow fine alongside N. ampullaria.
In general, I'm not an advocate of terrariums. I prefer that growers start off growing their plants without one. The vast majority of carnivorous plants you can find in cultivation adapt to household conditions. Sometimes terrariums also pose more problems than solutions, such as fungal infections and inadequate lighting. The choice to use a terrarium depends whether or not the plants you have are able to acclimate to lower humidity and your climate.
If you live in the southeastern region of the United States, you might not need a terrarium. We have many customers in that area of the country who successfully grow lowland Nepenthes without a terrarium. A terrarium might be useful for your Nepenthes if you live in the upper Midwest or in a desert climate. (Nepenthes ampullaria has a narrow range of growing requirements and doesn't acclimate well to lower humidity and cool temperatures.)
