Aqua Globes

Question
Hi I was wondering what your take on using Aqua Globes to water an Asian Pitcher plant.  It seems like a good idea because it would keep the soil moist but I just wanted to make sure that it would be ok to use. I'm growing a N. truncata at the moment.

Answer
Hi Gregg,

I haven't experimented with those devices, self-watering reservoirs.  My only concern is that it may not work with the type of soil Nepenthes require.  I recall seeing the commercials for this product and seeing them using it on an orchid.  The problem with that example was that they were using the wrong soil mix for the orchid just to show their product being used with that type of plant.  Based on what I've seen in the commercial, my assumption is that it won't work with soil that has lots of drainage, like orchid or Nepenthes mixes.

If you want a type of self-watering device, try an African violet pot.  You can pick one up at many garden centers.  This type of pot has a water reservoir and keeps the soil evenly moist.  If you use it, you'll need to change the soil slightly to increase water retention.  If you're using coconut husk, use 3 parts coconut husk and 2 parts dried sphagnum moss.  Another appropriate soil option is 2 parts peat moss and 3-4 parts perlite.

(The African violet pot is appropriate to use with Nepenthes, Cephalotus and Pinguicula.  Avoid using it with other types of carnivorous plants.)

There are also other types of self-watering devices.  You can find them by doing a search on Google.  Many garden forums also discuss home-made devices.

Good growing!
