mixture for dewy pine

Question
I have some dewy pine seeds in my fridge that I forgot to start this year and now I cannot remember the right soil mix. Is it too late to sow them (inside or outside) and what is the soil mix?

Answer
Hi Lynne,

The soil mix is equal parts sand, perlite and vermiculite.  Use a large terracotta pot.  Whether you place the pot inside or outside depends on where you live.  Dewy Pines need strong sunlight and warm temperatures.  They tolerate cool temperatures in the winter, but shouldn't be allowed to freeze.  Originating in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, they would be more suitable for a drier climate outdoors, such as southern California.

Before you sow the seeds be sure to scratch the outside seed coat with a file or emory board.  Just scrape the side until you barely see the white endosperm.  Otherwise germination can take months.

Here's a link to an article I highly recommend reading about Dewy Pines:  http://www.bestcarnivorousplants.com/Drosophyllum_lusitanicum.htm

Good Growing!
