QuestionNon edible I believe. I'm new to carnivorouse plants, but it dosnt seem like bug spray would be good.!! The plant I have is tall and red. It has very tiny white bugs crawling on it all the time. I don't think it's supposed to. They don't seem to be hurting the plant. Should I do anything about these bugs?
AnswerHi Wanda,
The bugs could be a pest of sorts, but it's difficult to identify them based on your description. They could be spider mites or white flies, or something else altogether. It could also be immature insects that could explode into a serious problem.
Carnivorous plants are very tolerant of bug sprays as long as you use the appropriate types. We have an arsenal of various types of bug sprays to protect our plants from many of the common pests. Start with a pyrethrin-based product. It's an extract from marigold. Safer?makes a great prepared solution of it, and you can find it at any garden center. Use it as directed by the manufacturer.
The product will breakdown within a couple of days, so you may need to reapply in about a week to make sure all the critters are dead.
You should also investigate if other plants in your collection are infected with these critters. If necessary, spray them too.
Good growing!
