Strange neighbor with my new Nepenthes

Question

neighbor
Hi again,

I've just purchased a Nepenthes from my local nursery (the 2nd one i've purchased from them)and I just noticed that it had a neighbor in the pot. I'm wonder what it is, and if I should remove it or leave it?

Also I was planning to move both my Nepenthes into one big pot. Is this a good idea? Will they grow as they normally would? Would it be better to plant them in a circular pot or a small planter? What type of soil mix should I use? I heard a mix of peat moss, perlite, sphagum moss, and orchid bark is good.

Thanks a lot for your time!

Sincerely,
Kelvin Lau

Answer
Hi Kelvin,

The neighbor plant looks a bit like Fireweed.  It's not a serious plant pest, but remove it if it gets too big.

Transplanting is just fine.  Just disturb the roots as little as possible.  Circular pots are usually better than square pots.  I'm not sure what your planter looks like.  As long as it has drain holes it should be fine.  The ingredients you listed for soil media are good.  Just use them in equal proportions, and wet the mix well before using.  Most Nepenthes are tolerant of a range of mixes as long as it drains well and doesn't have too much fertilizer in it.

Good Growing!
