Question
Butterwort
Hello there. I cannot remember what type of butterwort my plant is and I have been on several forums and asked but I always get mixed answers. I was wondering if you could help me out (especially since I bought this plant from you a while ago).
AnswerHi Heather,
To properly identify a butterwort, I need to see both the non-dormant leaves and the flower. Your plant is currently dormant, and many Mexican butterworts look very similar in this state.
Since you got the butterwort from us, my best guess is that it's a hybrid called Titan. We dub it the Sleeping Titan because it tends to go dormant quickly and stay dormant for a very long time. In our collection, this is the only butterwort that is still dormant, even at the start of summer! All of the other species and hybrids are actively growing right now.
If you want to bring it out of dormancy, spritz your plant with a solution of orchid fertilizer. Use 1/4 teaspoon per gallon. Spritz it once a week, even while it's out of dormancy. This will help keep your plant growing longer. We're not sure why the fertilizer helps, but it's the only thing that we've found to effectively bring the plant out of dormancy and keep it from going dormant too early in the season.
Good growing!
