Weird fly-like bug that keeps coming back to my plants

Question

Weird Fly
Hi, I keep seeing this same odd fly around my Sarracenias. It just sits on the soil or on the rhizome and just spreads its wings. What are they? Should I be killing these things to the death?  Hopefully the picture will help.

Answer
Hi Andrew,

That bug looks like a scorpion fly or something along that line.  It could also be a predatory wasp of sorts.  These bugs are hunters and are actually beneficial in the sense that they eat other bugs.  As far as I know about their life cycle, their larvae are predatory as well.

I wouldn't worry about it unless they start biting you.  They probably hang around your Sarracenia because it's like an all-you-can-eat buffet!

Good growing!
