QuestionHey there, I have had a Nepenthes Bicalcarata for about 3 years now. Confined in the grips of the terrarium. I would like to grow it as a windowsill plant but I don't know if it can handle these conditions. Main concern is Humidity...
Location: McCall, ID
humidity is between 25-60% Usually 40%.
Light: west facing window + 2 40 watt florescents
water Reverse osmosis + De-Ionized
Soil: Sphagnum, peat perlite 33%/66%
Thanks you guys, Your E-book is excellent!
Nick
AnswerHi Nick,
Sorry, but your bicalcarata would be better off in the terrarium. Even for us, it doesn't produce pitchers unless it is in a warm, humid environment. We have a batch of bicalcarata in our greenhouse, but they haven't produced any pitchers yet. Even though they get misted regularly, it's just been too cool for them. I also have one in my home, but it too hasn't produced any pitchers for a year. This species is a true lowlander, and it thrives in warm humid conditions. That's why we sell mostly highland species. Many lowland species just don't do well in the Pacific Northwest unless they're growing in a very warm greenhouse throughout the year.
By the way, we might be releasing bicalcarata, ampullaria and rafflesiana in July. If they don't have any decent pitchers on them by then, we're going to release them at a discount.
Good growing!
