distilled

Question
Is distilled water distilled by the evaporation method ok. I heard that it can have minerals from the metal the steam sticks to witch then turns into water and drips down.

Answer
Hi Nelson,

All distilled water is made by boiling the water, capturing the steam and condensing the steam back into water.  This leaves behind all other stuff behind.  Most water distillation uses glass coils to condense the steam, so this is perfectly fine.

Some distillation facilities use copper coils because it transfers heat and condenses steam a lot quicker.  Because water is neutral, it doesn't react with the copper, so you still end up with pure water.  Even if some leached in, the amount would be too minuscule to be of consequence.

If you're at all concerned about the quality of your distilled water, you can test it for dissolved mineral levels.  You can purchase test kits at your local aquarium store.  Distilled water should register zero or very close to it.  While water that is 50 parts per million or less is acceptable to use with carnivorous plants, at this level you're not getting what you paid for.

Good growing!
