QuestionI have read some people say the drop on temperature is really important for the cephalotus that even plants that look healthy just decay because of the lack or not proper drop on temperature...
Well I keep my small plant inside on the night to give it a droop on temperature but I'm not sure if is as much as should be, I keep the house on night between 75 to 72癋.
It's this cool enough or I should look for a way to cool it down a little bit more, maybe 60 to 65 degrees?
I'm thinking on a small "chamber" with a Peltier cell to lower a little bit more the temperature on the night but I'm not sure.
AnswerHi Fernando,
Yes, temperature is critical. I have friends in Hawaii that can't keep a Cephalotus alive for more than a year because it's simply too warm there. Cephalotus can tolerate very warm days, but they need a drop in nighttime temperature (45?- 65癋). Otherwise, they exhaust their energy supply and whither away.
Since your nighttime temperature is similar to Hawaii's nighttime temperatures, you should find a way to bring the temperature down below 65癋.
As I recall, you have your Cephalotus in a terrarium. If so, what you could do is place a large ice pack in the terrarium with your plant. Keep the ice pack an inch or two away from the plant. Don't allow it to touch the plant. Do this at night, and remove the ice pack in the morning. Place the ice pack back in the freezer to get it ready for the next night. Give this a try and see what temperature reading you get throughout the night.
Some growers go even one step further by placing their plant in a cooler with an ice pack. It seems a bit excessive, but might be necessary if you can't get the temperature down low enough.
Good growing!
