QuestionHello,
I have a Sarracenia Willisi as well as a Doodle Bug and both of them are seem to be sending up new shoots daily. However, none of the many shoots (some of them are about nine inches high) have opened. They are all "flat." Both plants are in a southern window. They are in a 50-50 mix of peat and perlite I use distilled/RO water. I live in New London, CT.
Thanks so much for your help. You guys are great!
Margaret
AnswerHi Margaret,
Just give your plants more time. What you're seeing is the new growth. They all start off looking like that, and eventually they open up. However, my concern is that your plants are not getting enough sunlight in your south window. Insufficient lighting will cause lanky growth and poor coloration. (Nine inch tall growth that hasn't opened up yet is an indication of low light.)
I checked the weather climate for your region, and it's safe to place your plants outdoors. Grow them in full sun where they can get 6 or more hours of direct sunlight. At our nursery, our Sarracenia receive direct sunlight from sunup to sundown.
But for now, be patient. It's still early in the season. With those varieties of Sarracenia, we don't see any open pitchers until early June, at least at our nursery.
