QuestionNot too long ago, one of my friends ordered some VFT's for her high school drama class. Needless to say, her and I took one each for ourselves, and one was designated as the "class plant."
A week or so later, I discovered that the class plant was left in prop room since they got it. No windows, no light. It was pretty much blackened save for one leaf still growing. I took the plant home, along with the one my friend had taken and brought them to where I kept mine (which is flourishing). They get good light, and good moisture, but all of their leaves with traps have died back, and I was curious as to whether or not simple sun and water will bring them back to a state where they can eat. They appear to have traps growing at the end of the stalks, but they're obvious under developed compared to my healthier plant.
AnswerHi Mario,
Yes, as you've been keen to notice, Venus flytraps are plants, and as plants, they need sunlight and water! Sometimes first-time growers think of them as animals, so they don't think about sunlight.
In a situation like this, the plant may come back, but you'll have to give it lots of time, perhaps a 3-4 months. On the other hand, if the plant is too weak from neglect, no amount of sunlight and water will revive the plant. You won't know for sure for another week or so whether or not it's strong enough to recover.
For now, give your plant partial sunlight and distilled water. Keep the water level rather low, no higher than 1/4 of the way up the pot. Again within a week or so you should know if the plant will make it. If there is still green on the plant and the green isn't getting smaller, then your plant is on the long road to recovery.
Good growing!
