QuestionHi, I am going to start a lowland tank for neps soon & I want to grow some sundews in there as well. What are the best species to grow in those conditions? Thank you!
AnswerHi Jay,
I generally don't recommend growing sundews in terrariums because they grow just fine outside of a terrarium. Depending on your climate as well, you might be able to grow your lowland Nepenthes without a terrarium. I have many customers in the the southern states, particularly Florida, who grow beautiful lowland Nepenthes as houseplants. So that's something to consider.
With that said, you can grow any of the tropical sundews in a terrarium provided that your lighting is strong enough to replicate full to partial sunlight. This means using at least a 40-watt fluorescent light fixture placed no more than 8 inches above the plant.
Some of the easier to grow sundews include:
Drosera adelae
Drosera capensis
Drosera spatulata
Drosera prolifera
For more information about growing any of these tropical sundews, read our care sheets online:

Good growing!
