planting sundews

Question
I saved a sundew from Lowes, probably an adelae. It has gotten over its humidity, light and temp change shock and I'm ready to plant it in a bigger pot. What is the best pot for it? Drained, undrained, tall or squat and round? Also, what is the best potting media? Does it like to be really wet or really damp? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

Transplanting Drosera adelae is fairly straight forward.  Use a 4-inch pot with drainage holes.  It doesn't matter if it's round or square.  That choice is really a matter of personal preference.  For soil, use a standard soil mix of 1 part sphagnum peat moss and 1 part perlite.

After repotting your sundew, place the pot in a saucer of water.  If your tap water is low in minerals, less than 50 parts per million, then you can safely use tap water.  However, if it's much higher than that or you don't know what level it's at, then use bottled distilled water until you can have your water tested for dissolved minerals.  You can either contact your local water bureau or take a water sample to your local aquarium store for testing.
