good choices

Question
I have had an interest in carnivorous plants for many years. As a result I have spent hundreds of dollars to kill many, many plants. It has been about three years since my last adventure and since then I have discovered the Internet and your informative web site. I have received many months of growing tips and now I am ready to venture once again into the growing stage. I am hesitant to waste family resources on poor choices.
I live in Pittsburgh, PA on the third floor of a three story apartment building that faces north and east. We have a spacious east facing balcony that gets direct sun for a minimum 6 hours a day during the growing season.
What species would offer me the most chance for success under these conditions? My wife and I grow orchids and ferns indoor with great success, so I do not consider myself an inexperienced or inept grower. I am retired, so I have ample time to devote to our plants. What would you suggest?

Answer
Hi Dale,

We have a new feature on our website called Best Plants For You.  Just answer a few questions about your growing conditions and you'll have a list of plants best suited for your home or garden.  Go to:

In general, any of the Sarracenia species would grow well for you as long as you can provide full sun.  During the winter months, these plants will go dormant, so you simply leave them on your balcony.
