wild sundew

Question

Sundew
I live in the tampa bay region in florida, and yesterday i found a wild sundew in an almost dry lake, around the outskirts of a small pond of water. I do not know the species, can you help me identify it? also, how do i germinate the seeds?

Answer
Hi George,

That is Drosera capillaris, also known as pink sundew because of its pink flowers.  It's very ubiquitous in the southeastern regions of the United States and is probably the most populous sundew in the country.

This plant is considered an annual in the wild and will bloom and set seeds in its first season of growth.  The seeds germinate easily in warm conditions (75?85癋).  Just sprinkle it on sphagnum peat moss.  I suppose you could also harvest some of the soil where you found the sundew.  The seeds will germinate within 3-4 weeks.

Good growing!
