Questionhi, i just had a few questions reguarding sarracenia flowers. First off i am extreamly happy that all my plants from last year survived thanks to your help. Now my question. Which Sarracenia plant flowers at this time? Today i went out to check them and one of my plants flowered not one but two flower buds!!! I think its my flava but im not sure. i took the labels out so yeah..oops. THe flowers are on 1 rhizome and they look orange to red in color. They are about 1-2 cm in length. Once these flower can i pollinate them with eachother? They are from one plant. Cant wait till the pitchers start growing!!! Thanks for all your help.
AnswerHi Dustin,
Sarracenia flava is usually the first one to send up flower buds, so it's most likely that species. The buds can range from being green to red. Once they bloom, the flowers are always yellow. I have a photograph of Sarracenia flava in bloom on the product page online.
You can certainly pollinate the flowers with each other, even if the flowers are on the same plant. The process is a bit extensive and it requires you to know flower anatomy, something that is difficult to describe in this format.
I strongly suggest that you read The Savage Garden by Peter D'Amato or Carnivorous Plants by Adrian Slack. They have information in there about pollinating Sarracenia flowers. We will also have a pictorial description of this process in the second edition of our ebook, due in July.
Good growing!
