temperature tolerances for:

Question
I wanted to know what the temperature limits (upper & lower) were for the following species: Drosera adelae, Drosera spathulata(Frazier Island form), Nepenthes sanguinea, N. ventricosa, N. madagascariensis, and N. rafflesiana. Soil for the Drosera is peat moss & perlite, the Nepenthes are in Fafard potting soil(3b). They are housed in a greenhouse for now, watered with distilled or rain water. I'm in S.E. North Carolina. Thanks for the information in advance.
Best regards, Larry Rouch

Answer
Hi Larry,

There is no hard and fast rule about temperature tolerances.  Many plants can withstand temperature extremes as long as the exposure is brief or the plant was properly acclimated for those conditions.  So when we talk about temperature ranges, we talk about the range for optimal growth rather than limits.

Drosera adelae
Nighttime: 55?- 70癋
Daytime: 70?- 80癋

Drosera spatulata
Nighttime: above 65癋
Daytime: 75?- 85癋

Nepenthes sanguinea
Nighttime: 55?- 70癋
Daytime: 75?- 85癋

Nepenthes madagascarensis
Nighttime: above 70癋
Daytime: 75?- 85癋

Nepenthes rafflesiana
Nighttime: above 70癋
Daytime: 75?- 85癋

These temperature ranges also need to be taken in context of sunlight and humidity.  Sometimes at cooler temperatures you will need to increase sunlight exposure, while at warmer temperatures you might need to decrease sunlight exposure.

The mix for your Drosera is fine (1 part of each), but I'm not familiar with Fafard potting soil.  As long as it isn't loaded with compost, garden soil, forest soil and other organic matter, it should be fine for Nepenthes.
