QuestionHi,I have a barrel of various sarracenia that are waking up after their winter nap.I'm not sure what to do with the old leaves and pitchers.Should I cut them to the base, cut only the brown off or just leave them? Also, are there any Drosera that will thrive in zone 7 year round left outside?I would like a pot of them but don't know if I'll need to bring them in for the winter. We get a few light snows and freezes but nothing too bad. Thanks for a great nursery!
AnswerHi Lisa,
Yes, with older leaves cut them off near the base of the plant. The general rule of thumb is to cut off any leaf when you can't stand looking at it anymore. At our nursery, we give all of our Sarracenia a haircut. The only exceptions are S. purpurea and S. psittacina. With those species we cut off only those leaves that are more than 50% brown. They are a bit slow growing, so we keep any leaves on them that we can.
Any of the US-native sundews will grow well for you:
D. anglica
D. intermedia
D. filiformis
D. rotundifolia
All of these will do fine in zone 7. You care for them in the same manner as you would Sarracenia.
