Cephalotus and fungus

Question
Hi,

I bought a clump of Cephalotus from you guys about a year ago and it's doing great!  I recently moved it from the 3" pot it came in into a 4" pot, and noticed that the new soil has some white, cotton-like stuff growing on it.  I assume it's some kind of fungus.  I tried washing it off the soil, but it came back after a couple of days.  Should I try spraying some Safer fungicide on it or is there a better solution?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Derrick,

Yes!  Spray it with a fungicide.  From your description, it seems like fungus.  Even if it isn't, the risk of it being a fungus is too great to ignore.  Besides, the Safer?brand of fungicide won't harm your Cephalotus.

You should also repot your plant in another batch of fresh soil to remove the presence of fungal spores.  Remove as much of the old soil as possible.  Use a mix of 1 part peat moss, 2 parts perlite and 1 part silica sand.

Good growing!
