N. bicalcarata

Question
I noticed on your site that you describe N. bicalcarata as an ultra lowland plant. I will attempting to grow this plant in South Central Mississippi. Can I grow this one in the house on a windowsill? Would you please give me the particulars that most likely will lead to success for my little vampires? Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Greg,

Unfortunately, Nepenthes bicalcurata is one of the Nepenthes that fits all the stereotypes about Nepenthes.  They like it hot and humid.  There's no harm in giving it a try on a windowsill.  My guess is that it will just look like a regular plant during the winter when humidity is lower, and will grow fairly well during the summer since Mississippi has no lack of heat and humidity during the summer.

One other pointer on N. bicalc. we discovered is that this plant likes it a bit more bog-like than most Nepenthes.  Grow this one in standard 50/50 peat/perlite.  We had some a couple year ago in our fast draining coconut mix and they did very poorly.  We put them in peat and they took right off.  Also, this plant can get very big.  So if it likes your window, watch out! :)

Good Growing!
