decapitation

Question
Hey I was thinking of decapitating my cape sundew because 1)I want a clump and 2)It is considerably smaller after a short flowering during winter. How long would it be before it recovers? It makes me nervous to lob off its head like that!

Answer
Hi Corey,

Everyone feels nervous about doing that at first.  Even regular gardeners are nervous at first about pruning roses, trees, or shrubs, until you see what happens if you don't.  You are much more likely to loose the plant if you don't do it.  Right now the plant is putting excessive energy into that flower stalk.  By decapitating it, it will redirect it's resources into new leaf production.

Look for new shoots forming in about 2-3 weeks.  Make sure your keeping it in very bright light.  You should see about 3-5 new shoots from around the stump.  A temporary clear cup over the top is a good idea at first also, as long as you don't bake it in direct sun.

Good Growing!
