Question
I see webs in between the teeth on some of my venus flytraps and especially on some that are turning/ have turned black. Are these spider mites? I have not seen any kind of bugs on my plants yet. I also see them on some places on my D. Multifida "Extrema". They seem to be there on quite a few of some of them. Also, can you elaborate on the differences between the rooted cuttings of the N. Poi Dogs and the seed grown plants? I can email pictures if needed.

Answer
Hi Patrick,

It certainly could be spider mites on your plants.  As a precaution, spray them with a pesticide that contains permethrin.  This compound works well on mites.  You'll need to spray again in 7-10 days to take care of any hatchlings. As always, follow the directions indicated by the manufacturer.

The rooted cuttings are cuttings from adult plants and are genetically identical from the parent plant.  The cuttings are usually done on the upper portion of the vine.  The advantage of doing cuttings is that you have an adult size plant within a year or less.

Seed grown plants are just that, from seed. These plants take longer to mature and are in our care much longer than a cutting.  Plants will also have their gorgeous lower pitchers until they reach the vining stage (4-5 years), while cuttings may or may not have any lower pitchers, depending on the cutting.

Good growing!
