QuestionHello,
Is Nepenthes alata x merrilliana a nepenthes that grows in low land conditions? More specifically, alongside my N. X Mixta?; or is it better grown in a windowsill in my home? Also, what are the steps needed to reacclimatize plants after they have been shipped from Sarracenia Northwest if any specifically Nepenthes and D. Spatulata? I bought your e-book and it says that my nepenthes will benefit from bi-weekly foliar feeding. If i already feed it insects as fertilizer should i still be foliar fertilizing it? Or is this overdose?
Thank You
p.s. The e-book is fantastic!
AnswerHi Patrick,
This particular hybrid is considered an intermediate. Nepenthes alata has a fairly wide range of growing conditions, so it provides the hybrid with a bit more resilience. Nepenthes merrilliana adds its distinctive colors and size.
It grows well in most homes, and if you already grow N. x mixta, this plant will grow well for you.
As with all plants, there is some acclimation process, but it's not at all extensive. We actually grow the plants in lower humidity to reduce the risk of shock.
If you give your plant insects, there is no need to foliar spray.
We're also in the process of revising our e-book. So look for the second edition coming out in 2008!
Good growing!
