QuestionI am planting a Juniperus scopulorum 'Wichita Blue' @6ft tall. Would you stake it and if so, how would you?
AnswerConifers generally don't require staking, but there are three exceptions: Those used in very windy locations may need to be staked, but for no more than a year, long enough for anchor roots to develop sufficiently to support the plants. Staking is also beneficial for weeping or pendulous plants that are not yet self-supporting. I really do not think you will need to stake this tree.
When you plant it dig the hole twice the size of the root ball and as deep and fill with good top soil or potting soil. Plant it so that the top of the original rootball is at ground level. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch (pine straw is good) not piled up on the trunk.
