Driveway Foundation Buckling

Question
There is a pine tree approximately one foot from my driveway. My concern is, could this be responsible for the damage that has been done to my driveway, such as buckling up and breaking the concrete into pieces?

Answer
Yes a tree this close even a pine will have an effect on the driveway. Pines have a tap root but also lateral roots that normally would not be a problem But being this close to the drive the roots are large nearer the tree and sounds like they are lifting the drive. You can install a root barrier along the drive and this will stop the root from growing that way. You did not say how large the tree was --the root barriers will work better on a smaller pine--larger pines more than likely have done their damage already. Here is a web link to these barriers--it will take digging a trench along the drive and installing the barrier. It should not harm the tree since the tap root will compensate for the loss of some of the lateral roots. http://www.4specs.com/s/32/32-9452.html
