Planting Seedlings

Question
We received 20 Blue Spruce seedlings from the Arbour Society in the mail today.  A couple of questions...

First, how far apart should they be planted (or how far from another tree?)

Second, does the amount of moisture in the soil matter?

Third, is there anything special that should be done in preparing the soil?

They will be planted in Hartford, Maine 04220.

Thanks for your assistance.

Answer
When you search for the perfect spot in your yard to plant your tree, keep these facts in mind: on the average, a Colorado Blue Spruce tree grows to be 35 feet high and 15 feet across. It grows best in moist, nutrient-rich, but well-drained soil. This type of evergreen prefers full or partial sun. It doesn't grow well in shade.
If you want a hedge I would plant them 3-5 feet apart. If you want them to grow as individuals I would plant them 10 feet apart.

I assume that these are in pots--dig the new hole twice the size of the pot and as deep and fill with good top soil or potting soil. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk.

They do not need to have the soil wet at all times. I would water them once a week with 1 inch of water --place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Do this If it does not rain. I would water weekly through the summer months.
