pine trees planted in wet soil

Question
I have been trying to get a long wind break of pine trees established for several years.    A few of them are set into an area that is continually wet in the spring and eventually kills the trees.   Is there anything I can do- to either the soil or the trees- to help eliminate this problem?

Answer
Loblolly pine does fairly well in wet conditions but other pine species do not so as well. You may want to go with bald cypress they can withstand wet soil. But they do lose their leaves in the winter. What is happening is the roots system needs to get oxygen and the wet soil is squeezing the air spaces out of the soil and the roots die. There is not really any thing that can be done unless you build a berm a couple of feet high and plant the pines on the berm.
