norwegian pine

Question
We were given a pot containing 2 small trees at Christmas that had been bought at Walmart. We think they are Norwegian Pines, but we don't know. They have a slim trunk covered with needles & branches that stick out with drooping finger looking pine needles. I would like to plant them in our yard in central Florida, & want to know which location is best. Do they prefer a southern or northern exposure & how far from the house do I need to plant them for good root clearance? Thank you for your help.

Answer
It will become a large tree (Height of 70'-80' on good sites) so plant it so it can get room to grow-not right beside the house. Roots very windfirm. Seedlings develop 6"-18" taproots in the first growing season. Older trees develop a widespreading and moderately deep root system. If unhindered by competition, the longest lateral roots may extend 40' beyond the crown. Vertical roots may penetrate to 15'. I would plant about 20 feet or more form the house.
It will grow in all types of light from full sun to partial shade.
The important thing when planting a tree is dug the hole twice the size of the pot and as deep and fill with good top soil or potting soil. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk --pine straw is good.
