QuestionMy Deodora tree is turning brown and loosing it's needles. I noticed that there seems to be some sort of parasite on the branches. These are tiny fuzzy brown things.
do you know what these are? Are they just the remains of where needles have dropped? Is there anything I can do to save my tree? I live in Spartanburg, South Carolina and I do have other Deodoras that are okay. Thanks for any info you can provide.
AnswerFrom the description is will be difficult to ID this problem with out looking at the tree. If the needles are eaten off I would lean toward a sawfly. But if there are small fluffy insects it maybe mealy bugs or aphids. The safely can be controlled with a contact insecticide and the aphids and mealy bugs can be controlled with a soil applied insecticide called Bayer advanced Tree and Scrub Insect control. I would suggest you contact the local office of the SC Forestry Commission and ask one of their Foresters to come take a look. OR you can call the SC main office and talk with Laurie Reid their Forest Health Specialist and see what she thinks --she may be able to visit also. Here is the web link to the contact information for the SC Forestry Commissions Insect and Disease program. You can tell Laurie I sent you--I was her counterpart here in Alabama before retiring.
