QuestionI live on the Costa Blanca in Spain and we have many Pinus halepensis. One is looking different than the others as the needles are looking brown. I have noticed holes all over the trunk with white resin on the sides. Someone says its a beetle and I should cut the tree down. Can I save it and if so what treatment should I give it. Thank you
AnswerI am not familiar with bark beetles in Spain BUT here in the US when a pine is infested with bark beetles and the needles are brown the tree is dead and should be cut down and removed from the area so emerging beetles will not infest other pines. IF there is still green needles on the pine the entire trunk can be sprayed with an insecticide to kill the beetles in the tree--this is about a 50/50 chance that the tree will survive. Here we use an insecticide called Onyx or Merit both work well on bark beetles. I do not know if these are available in Spain.
