Germinating conifer seeds in tropics

Question
QUESTION: Hi, Jim. I抦 thinking of ordering some seeds from eBay. I would like to hear your opinion if the seeds of Cupressus sempervirens and Picea pungens can be successfully germinated in tropical country like Malaysia? Thanks and have a nice day.

ANSWER: Yes but the germination rate maybe low for these seeds. So do not expect a new plant for every seed you plant. If you get 50-75% you will be lucky.

QUESTION: Thanks for your quick reply, Jim. I may want to try my luck later after gathering more information. Picea pungens is a cold-loving conifer. Do you think it will survive here after germination? Is there any special cultural tips you can recomend?

Answer
I think it will germinate and you may grow it for a time if you keep it watered but the higher temperatures as it gets older will do it in. I have seen them in Southern Florida as fairly large trees. Micro climates are strange. All I could say is try it what have you got to lose except time.  I would try it in a semi shade area to try and cut down on the heat from direct sun.
