cypress tree roots

Question
I've have a large bald cypress tree in my front yard, about 20 to 30 feet tall.  The roots or knees are all over the side and front of my house and i've noticed a few new ones.  Is there any way to get rid of or at least control these roots , and will it get out of control as the tree gets bigger?  Just wondering, thanks.

Answer
Knee production is usually a sign of a wet area.  The bald cypress develops its knees growing in wet sites. The knees do not develop on upland locations. As such, it is thought that the knees assist in gas exchange and nutrient absorption for roots immersed in water. Some time back, knees were removed and sold as gifts. There was apparently no concern that such practice killed or harmed the trees. A knee removed will not grow back; however, new knees will continue to push upward if growing conditions remain unchanged. Yes, it would be practical to grind those knees down to facilitate mowing.
They will get larger. I would just cut them back to ground level.
