QuestionWe live on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
There are 'blobs' of sap all over the bottom 3 feet of the trunks of a few of my white pines. Many/most of these blobs have a hole in the center, making me think that some sort of insect has bored into the trunk. As the sap dries, it falls off the tree, so there's a pile of dried chunks of sap on the ground around the tree. I have never noticed this before, and am obviously concerned. The trees appear healthy now, but I don't want to wait until it's too late!
Thank you very much for your help.

AnswerSounds like bark beetles. I would spray the trunk of the tree as high as you can reach with an insecticide for bark beetles. One of the new insecticides is Onyx but there are others. Check with your local nursery/ garden type store for an insecticide for bark beetles.
