would it be possible to kill a conifer without cutting it down ?

Answer
The easiest way is to take an axe and cut a 1 inch slice of the bark all the way around the tree trunk --this will girdle the tree and cut off the water to the foliage. If you spray a herbicide (Roundup) in this cut this will speed up the process but it is not needed.
