Questioni brought back redwood seeds from california and i want to see if i can grow one. i live in massachusetts so i don't even know if they will grow here. but if they do,any kind of helpful hints you might be able to give me to give it the best chance to survive would be nice. i know i'll never see it grow up but it would be nice to try. thank you.
AnswerGenerally I would say you will have a low sucess rate--first the seed have a low germination rate --less than 10% of them will grow-second redwood grow in area where there is fog or a mist and they may dry up in other areas and I am not sure how they will make it in cold weather. With this said here are instruction on starting the plants from seed. Go ahead and give it a try.
1. Plant at least 20 redwood seeds shallowly in a cardboard or peat pot using clean potting soil. The germination rate is only 5%.
2. Place the pot in a plastic bag and seal it with a rubber band.
3. Keep MOIST in a cool area with indirect light, no sun. Seeds must not become dry during the germination period but do not over-water.
4. When the tree is a few inches tall plant the pot and all in a larger container with more potting soil. Don't overwater but keep the tops misted, remember, they normally live in a rain forest.
