New Italian Cypress drying out

Question
We just planted 7 Italian Cypress in our backyard in Kingman, AZ. It's pretty hot here now. The cypresses are so dry, you touch them and they crinkle. They're almost turning white. I felt the soil, and it's moist. The water is set to come on each night at around 7 pm. I'm wondering if we may be watering too much, but the branches are so dry. The cypress we planted were pretty full sized and came in 24" boxes. Please give me some advice on how to get them to recover before they die altogether. So far, the bottom of each of the plants is the dryest, some more than others. Please help!!

Answer
sounds like your plants may have already succumbed to too frequently waterings. they have already got root rot and mold/fungal problems. water in the AM not PM. this will prevent fungal problems. italian cypress like hot dry conditions(arizona). my guess is you have made 3 major mistakes...
1)you picked the worse time of the year to plant them(way too hot).
2) you have been watering them too frequently. it's not as simple as "water everyday or once a week". each type plant has its own watering requirements. watering frequency depends on many factors(sun exposure, type of plant, wind, day temps, indoors VS outdoor location, etc.). plants in the ground need watering only during prolonged dry spells or every so many days until established. once a week may be too often during cloudy or cooler weather. may be too little during hot sunny weather. you don't kill plants by watering them w/too much water. you kill them by watering too frequently.
3) you should have asked for more detailed directions on taking care of them before putting them in the ground.
sorry about not being more positive. but i think you are asking the right questions, but unfortunately you waited too long.  get to a local garden center/nursery and see what they think you might be able to do now.
good luck
