Hemlock hedge

Question
We are considering purchasing hemlock plants for a southern facing lawn.

Can you guide me to how we maintain the hemlock to create a low (3-4') square shape .. (e.g square hedge appearence) ?

When do we prune the hemlock the first year ? and following years ?

How close should we space the plants for a uniform hedge look ?

How do we make sure it becomes full ?

Answer
visit a few local garden centers/nurseries to find someone knowledgeable on plants and installation. buy your plants from them & they should be glad to educate you on how to install and maintain the plants. see what varieties of hemlocks they recommend for your area. i'm in southern NJ.
the 1st year or 2 you should prune them so that they are all the same size. as they fill in and reach the desired height you should prune them yearly(or twice a year) to maintainn them at the desired height. square, pointed, round is all up to your taste, as long as you are consistant. use a gas hedge shear to make the job easy and efficient. one of the most important things most people don't do to plants is to fertilize at least 2 times per year. i like espoma brand-hollytone for evergreens. sprinkle 1-2 coffee cupfulls under each plant once in the spring and again in early fall to keep them looking nice and healthy.
Good luck
Rick
