QuestionI have a 'big' conifer in my back yard. It has a huge open space beneath it that I would like some color in. It is a never ending battle to keep the needles picked up, but what type of vegetation would be the best. Hosta? I have a couple of flowering perennials (zinnia I think, that are growing but struggling) The tall daisy is surviving there too. I also have a wrought iron bench that is doing exceptionally well.
Thanks for your help.

Answeryou'll need acid loving plants because all those needles create a very acidic soil content. visit your local (try more than one) garden center/nursery to see what they recommend for under conifers (asters, azaleas, etc.). leave the needles as a mulch. in NC many flowering plants grow under the pine trees. see what the neighbors are using.
